The Biden administration explained Thursday it is doing work with the semiconductor sector to deal with a chip shortage that has impacted auto production around the earth.
The shortage has alarmed lawmakers, with Sen. Rob Portman, Ohio Republican, warning the White House last 7 days that it “threatens our article-pandemic financial recovery, the repercussions of which stand to be especially acute in dominant auto manufacturing states” these types of as Ohio.
Standard Motors, which has explained the shortage could shave up to $2 billion from 2021 revenue, has extended production cuts at a few North American plants.
“The administration is at present identifying likely choke factors in the supply chain and actively doing work together with critical stakeholders in sector and with our trading associates to do much more now,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki explained at a briefing Thursday.
She extra that the “longstanding concern with brief supply of semiconductors was … a single of the central motivations for the executive order the president will sign in the coming weeks to undertake a detailed critique of supply chains for crucial items.”
“The critique will be centered on identifying the fast steps we can take, from improving upon the physical production of all those products in the U.S., to doing work with allies to develop a coordinated response to the weaknesses and bottlenecks that are hurting American workers,” Psaki explained.
