At the Kondo graveyard in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, unmasked volunteers have been digging holes and felling trees to increase a compound that has tripled in dimension since past 12 months. Throughout the pandemic’s first wave, hazmat-suited government officials arrived at evening to secretly bury the dead, graveyard personnel and bereaved people said. Now, modest teams of mourners get for hasty ceremonies next to floral tributes.
